Cumulus Expands local sports line up, launches new national programming Jan 2nd

Cumulus Media expands local sports lineup, launches new national programming lineup on January 2, 2013

WSEA, now calling itself “Sports Radio 100.3 the TEAM”, is expanding its local lineup. On January 2, 2013, “The Drive” with Aaron Marks will add another hour to its broadcast every day, airing M-F from 3:00 – 6:00 p.m.

In addition to the expanded hours the show will bring in a new co-host, Jon Cupo, to sit alongside Marks. Cupo, who currently resides in Cleveland, OH, has hosted shows in Lexington, KY and Charlotte, NC where he covered the NFL, NASCAR and College Basketball.

The support of our outstanding sponsors and listener base has been amazing ever since we launched our local show, “The Drive”, in August of 2011,” said show host and station program director Aaron Marks, “listeners have asked if we'll ever expand the show and it's been a goal of ours for a long time. I appreciate the continued support of our great sponsors and Cumulus getting behind what we do every day and creating a situation to do more of it.”

Market Manager David Lewis is thrilled with the move and excited to bring in a talented host like Cupo to sit alongside Marks every day.

When you combine Jon's extensive background covering NASCAR, the NFL and College Basketball around the SEC and Big Ten and combine that with Marks' background in the golf industry and covering college football and basketball across the ACC and Big South, it creates a combination that will be equal to any local or national show you hear on any radio station around the country,” said Lewis.

Sports Radio 100.3 the TEAM” will continue its relationship with the daily airing of “Sports Talk” hosted by Phil Kornblut and Kevin McCreary. “Sports Talk” is syndicated across nearly 30 stations in South Carolina and is a Columbia based talk show focusing on the South Carolina Gamecocks and Clemson Tigers. The show also extensively covers HS recruiting for all of our state Colleges and Universities.

The expanded line up now creates five hours of local/regional talk programming airing from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday – Friday.

The station will also continue to develop its High School Sports Coverage and Weekly golf show in 2013.

In addition to the expanded local line up “Sports Radio 100.3 the TEAM” will be changing national affiliations and programming. ESPN syndication will be dropped from the station, and in accordance with Cumulus moves on a national level, “Sports Radio 100.3 the TEAM” will syndicate CBS Sports Radio Programming. The new daily show line up effective January 2, 2013:

6 a.m. - 9 a.m. Tiki Barber, Dana Jacobson, and Brandon Tierney

9 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. John Feinstein

12:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Jim Rome

3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. “The Drive” with Aaron Marks & Jon Cupo

6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. “Sports Talk” with Phil Kornblut

8:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. Chris Moore

10:00 p.m. - 2 a.m. Scott Ferrall

2 a.m. - 6 a.m. Damon Amendolara

Boomer Esiason, Tom Tolbert, and Doug Gottleib will also serve roles on the station as Guest Hosts, and Anchors for hourly CBS Sports Updates that have already been running on Sports Radio 100.3 the TEAM throughout the fall.

The station has officially launched a new website at www.teammyrtlebeach.com with more national and regional headlines, scores, and station information.

This is a great move. Cumulus has partnered with CBS Sports to launch a network across the country that we have the ability to be more hands on and have more control with,” said Market Manager David Lewis, “ESPN's product had become so readily available it was no longer exclusive to our station. We now have an awesome, new, sports radio product that can only be heard on the radio dial at 100.3 in Myrtle Beach. It will bring new voices, new guests, and a new perspective on sports radio along the Grand Strand.”

Sports Radio 100.3 the TEAM” will continue its relationships and partnerships with Coastal Carolina University, the Carolina Panthers, Atlanta Braves, Myrtle Beach Pelicans, University of South Carolina, and East Carolina University.

Additionally, Cumulus will continue to operate FOX Sports Radio 1050AM/101.9FM. The only change is that Jim Rome, now with CBS Sports, no longer will air from Noon until 3:00 p.m. on that station. The replacement to that show is yet to be announced. The Dan Patrick Show will continue to air in its live time slot from 9 a.m. until noon on the station.

ACC will become first "Super Conference"

Greetings from Asheville, NC. My wife had a work related trip that I decided to make with her and I'm currently enjoying a tall Yuengling at Buffalo Wild Wings and reading about this crazy news going on in college sports! Yes... I'm that guy that I see at the bar every day and makes me angry because I have to do a show that afternoon.

I must say I am jealous of Jeff Zell from WBTW today, as he has got a ton of great news to get to!

Speaking of this news, this is big. This is big for Notre Dame and it's massive for the ACC. I know... you're thinking it's not that big of a deal because they are only a partial member of football. But you are completely missing the boat on this if you think that's what is happening here. First off, here is why this is a great benefit to both Notre Dame and the ACC. Then we'll mix it up with some thoughts on who the final piece of the puzzle will be:

Why this is great for Notre Dame:

The easy answer is, the Big East is currently on life support. Notre Dame needed to be a part of a stronger conference  to keep up its level of success. I thought the Big Ten made the most sense (Jim Delaney has got to be furious with the news he woke up to this morning by the way) but the ACC did make sense as well. From an academic standpoint it's a good fit, plus Notre Dame is a national commodity. They can be part of any conference and with the addition of Pitt and Syracuse the ACC made that much more sense from a regional perspective. But here's the big reason Notre Dame needed to move...

The NCAA Playoffs are going to expand either via the NCAA or the conference will take it in their own hands. The NCAA will make double the money on the a 4-team playoff than it did in the entire bowl system. What does that figure go to with 8-teams? Or if they stay at 4-teams the conference could create their own national quarterfinal and make being a conference champion a critical component.

Weather you like it or not we are heading the direction of 16-team super conferences. Two eight team divisions and the championships can serve as either a national quarterfinal with 4 super conferences, or it will be a guarantee for the 4 champs to be in an 8-team playoff and then the losers are sweating it out that they get at large bids. So which conferences will get to 16 the quickest? Yesterday it was the ACC and SEC were the closest, and the Pac 12 is waiting to make its move with lots of options available including independent BYU who was so angry they did not get invited to the Pac 12 along with Utah they decided to leave everybody and go independent. Basically they told the Pac 12 instead of going to the prom with a dud, they were going to just sit at home and wait on their phone call.

Of those three conference, which one made the most sense for Notre Dame? The answer to this is very easy. There was never a thought of going to the SEC or Pac 12 for Notre Dame.

Why this was brilliant for the ACC?

Gosh this is kind of easy, right? You take one of the 3 teams who have national prominence (Alabama and Southern Cal are the other two) and make them part of your conference. AND you make them a partial member in football, something they have never committed to before. Meaning when the 16 team expansion comes and there's an auto bid into the national playoff for the winner... Notre Dame instantly becomes a full member without paying any exit fees to the Big East or anyone else.

The ACC also recently increased its exit fee to a whopping $50 Million. With the addition of Notre Dame and that exit fee, Florida State and Clemson are not going anywhere.

And the ACC is the only conference in America that can stage tournaments and championship games in anyone of the following cities:
Charlotte, Washington D.C., Atlanta, New York, Tampa Bay or Chicago. That is absurd financially for the conference.

The Final Point and Question that needs to be answered

This all leads to my final point and question... who is #16? The ACC has to go to 16 teams and it's going to happen pretty quick. You don't have a 15-team basketball tournament. Scheduling will be a night mare. And now with Notre Dame the ACC has the ability to go after anyone they want in the country. Forget about that little map showing only Atlantic Coast states. The ACC is seeking national prominence and they have the ammo to go into any University Board of Directors meeting and make a convincing argument. Or do the Board of Directors start approaching them?

Texas is my first thought. They had issues in the past in the Big 12 with the Longhorn network and they would love to be paired with Notre Dame. They've made no secret about that and Texas and the ACC were thrown around once before.

Ohio Stat is a thought. With the Big Ten not able to secure Notre Dame, and Penn State in an absolute free fall could Ohio State be looking to align itself with the first super conference?

Could the ACC raid the powerful SEC? South Carolina makes a ton of sense and secures the continuity of the in state rivalry match up with Clemson. For the same reasons Georgia and Florida are a possibility. Half the SEC is in the central time zone now and they may be focused on adding more of the state of Texas, or someone out of Oklahoma or Kansas. Doesn't the ACC make sense for a USC, Georgia or Florida team that wants to keep its regional ties?

Prepare for the next round and what may be the final round of conference expansion. If the NCAA is only going to create a 4-team playoff, then the conferences will step in and create a defacto quarterfinal weekend of conference championship games. That makes the panels job really easy.

ESPN Radio 100.3 The Team adds Atlanta Braves Baseball to Air Schedule

'The Team' increases its partnership with more regional pro sports teams on the air in Myrtle Beach. Partnership allows for more promotional giveaways, and show content as well.

The Atlanta Braves are back on the air in Myrtle Beach, SC, and Cumulus Broadcasting continues to build its lineup of local and regional show content and Play by Play.

On Wednesday, June 13, 2012, the first Braves broadcast of the season versus the New York Yankees will air in Myrtle Beach.

Atlanta fans can expect to hear many Braves games on weekends, as well as, on their west coast series swings throughout the remainder of the season. If the Braves make a playoff run and the broadcast does not conflict with Coastal Carolina University or already scheduled programs, the station will pick up coverage of all games they feel are critical to its on air lineup.

“We said back in March with the expansion of our new FOX Sports 1050AM/101.9FM it would open the door to add more local and regional play by play, and we're excited to be coming through on that promise,” said Aaron Marks, station Program Director and Host of the stations signature afternoon show 'The Drive'.

Renewing the partnership with the Braves allows the station to air Play by Play Broadcasts seven
nights a week. The station already provides coverage most nights of MLB, NBA, Coastal Carolina and other college and pro sports and this schedule will help fill out all remaining nights that are open.
“It's really great,” says Marks, “if you're listening to sports radio at night, play by play is the way to go. It engages the listeners more than anything else. And this week alone for the launch you will hear the NBA Finals, U.S. Open Coverage, Braves inter-league games, and the College World Series all on our air waves here in Myrtle Beach. We have something people want to hear every night!”
For the full broadcast schedule of all games on the air visit the station website at www.teammyrtlebeach.com. ESPN Radio 100.3 'The Team' will also continue to provide coverage of the MLB Game of the week and entire coverage of the MLB Playoffs and World Series. This fall the station renews it's partnership for an 8th season to carry the Carolina Panthers and NFL Games of the week.

Final day of the regular season!

Today is the final day of the college baseball regular season, and there is plenty riding on the line for teams from Baton Rouge to Blacksburg. Some teams are playing for the number one seed in their conference tournaments and some are just trying to get into the tournament.

So here are today's situations for the SEC, Big South, and ACC that you need to be listening and watching for...

BIG SOUTH

Let's start with the Big South because its pretty simple. Coastal Carolina locked in the #1 seed in the tournament yesterday for the 6th consecutive season by winning game one over Charleston Southern. They added to their RPI by winning game two and look to finish off the series sweep today. Coach Gary Gilmore sat his star catcher Tucker Frawley in game two, Tyler Herb pitched limited innings in game one, so the Chants are certainly in post-season preparation mode. But who will they play on Tuesday and what time...

High Point is playing for their post-season lives. The conference tournament is on a rotation basis and this year it hits High Point which increases the pressure today. Winthrop and High Point are closing out the season playing for the #8 seed. Only 8 teams make the conference tournament and Presbyterian is ineligible for the post season this year in conference play. If High Point wins today's finale, they are in. And as the host team they get the feature 8:00 game on Tuesday night. So that means CCU would play host High Point in the #1 vs. #8 match up on Tuesday. So #8 gets to host? That's the way it works sometimes. If Winthrop wins then CCU will play Winthrop on Tuesday at 4:30 when the #1 vs. #8 game is currently planned. Last time the two teams met was what turned out to be the final game at Watson Stadium last Saturday and Winthrop got the win. CCU doesn't care who they get, they just want to play some baseball. And as the station Sports Director, I just want to know if I have a show on Tuesday or not!

SOUTHEASTERN CONFERENCE

On to the SEC which has CRAZY story lines going today. The Gamecocks could be the #1 overall seed, or as low as the #4 seed. Here's the situation...

The #1 and #2 seeds go to the two division winners based on conference winning percentage, NOT the two best teams but as it turns out its going to likely work out that way. Seeds #3-#10 are based purely on overall winning percentage, doesn't matter what division you play in or what your division record is! But those things typically co-relate. So here are the top four seeds and how things work today:

As I said, USC is overall #1 with a .643 conference winning percentage right now. Kentucky and Florida are a 1/2 game back with a .621 winning percentage. So the Eastern Division is intense today on the final day of the season. Before I get into those details... what about the West? It's done. LSU is at worst the #2 seed, but they get the #1 seed if they beat USC tonight. Either way they get a bye and will not play on Tuesday. They are three games ahead of 2nd place Arkansas.

So back to the East. If USC wins today they are the #1 seed in the tournament. Simple. Easy. Just Win Baby. If they lose... things get very interesting because they could still be #2, #3 or #4. They want to be #1 or #2 because in a 10 team tournament that's one less day and one less game you have to play to win the conference. Also if you win the SEC Regular Season title there is no way you don't get one of the eight national seeds with home field advantage all the way through to Omaha. Is that important? Last year 6 of the 8 College World Series teams were national seeds.

A loss today for USC plus a loss for UK against Mississippi State (UK is reeling. They have gone from regular season champion to having lost 3 in a row to Murray State and Mississippi State so if they don't make something happen in the next week they will not be a national seed), and a loss for Florida who is playing Auburn, will leave USC as the #2 seed. If either of those teams win, then they pass USC. So one of them winning makes USC the #3 seed. Both of them winning means USC is the #4 seed. Crazy stuff.

How about the bottom of the standings? Anyone playing their way in? Nope. Tennessee and Alabama will not make the SEC tournament. So everyone else is just playing for seeding today.

ATLANTIC COAST CONFERENCE

And finally on to the last conference we cover in Myrtle Beach... the ACC. Let's talk about the format first. This is why people either love or hate college athletics. Conferences can't even agree on a similar format. The NCAA Tournament doesn't even play the same format in each section. It goes from a four team double elimination pod in round one, to a best of 3 between two team Super Regional, to a double elimination eight team college world series.

So the Big South is an 8 team double elimination, just like the College World Series. What a concept. Why doesn't everyone just do that? Who knows. The SEC plays a 10 team format with #1 and #2 getting byes on day one. It it double elimination from Tuesday - Friday, but once you get to the semifinals and finals on Saturday and Sunday it becomes single elimination. And then there's the ACC. The ACC is a 12 team conference with two 6 team divisions, just like the SEC. The ACC allows 8 teams in, like the SEC used to do until this year, and like the Big South currently does. The eight teams are seeded #1-#8. But then they are divided up into two four team pods that do not play double elimination like the 1st round of the World Series, but play a Round Robin tournament so that everyone gets three games. And the confusion doesn't stop there. Pod one is seeds #1, #4, #5, and #8. Pod two is seeds #2, #3, #6, and #7. If you can follow the NCAA Rules handbook... then it makes sense! AND these 8 seeds are not the overall 8 seeds in the conference but they are the top 4 seeds from each division, then re-seeded 1-8 based on winning percentage. I get that the ACC has a lot of schools that are difficult to get into academically, but are they trying to confuse everyone who struggled with math in school? Stop letting the Engineers at Virginia Tech come up with your post season format! Ask a guy from Tuscaloosa. He'll come up with something we can all understand... and then he'll poison your trees that have been in your family for 9 generations.

Concerning seeds, #1 will be Florida State. #2 will be North Carolina. But the Tar Heels are the hottest team in America riding a 12-game winning streak into the final day of the regular season. Let me see a show of hands for who wants to play those guys right now. AND the tournament is in Greensboro. Which leads to two random thoughts real quick...

1) Wasn't the tournament supposed to be in Myrtle Beach at the Pelicans Stadium? Oh yea it was... but the NAACP got involved and was going to boycott it because the state of SC has not removed the confederate flag from the State House grounds. So goodbye tens of thousands in revenue for our servers, hoteliers, and that balloon guy I saw at the Outback last night (I'm being serious with that one, my wife and I declined the balloon animal because we're older than 12 and wanted to spend our money on Skinny Margaritas for her, and Stella Artois for me). But this is for a whole other column that will probably come... next week!

2) Didn't FSU's president say a good reason to leave the ACC was that it was to North Carolina-centric? I'm sure he's not thrilled about his #1 Seminoles traveling to Greensboro to try to win this tournament.

Outside of the top seeds... Maryland, BC and Duke are out. There is one story line to watch and that is Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech who are deadlocked for the #8 overall seed, and 4th place in the Coastal Division. Virginia Tech has the upper hand because their overall record is significantly better. So if the Hokies win today, they are in. If they lose but GT also loses to Miami (which has happened the last two days) they are in.

Come back to this blog tomorrow and I'll have the seeding's and game times for all three conference tournaments!

Don't overthink Saints suspensions... it's very simple

Today we finally got the news. We waited for the schedule to be released. We waited for Coach Sean Payton to say his goodbyes. We even waited for the Draft to finish up before the New Orleans Saints found out the fate of their players most heavily involved in the Bounty Gate scheme orchestrated by former defensive coordinator Greg Williams. And today we got answers...

Jonathon Vilma... done for the season without pay.

Anthony Hargrove... 8 games. He doesn't even play for the Saints anymore. Neither does Scott Fujita who is suspended for three games. And current Saint Will Smith is banned 4 games. I just called Will Smith a Saint. That's ironic.

Certain words come to mind immediately. Ouch. Damn. That sucks (ok phrases come to mind). But are you really surprised? I'm not. Are you ticked off? You shouldn't be. Do you think it's too much? It's not. And all of these suspensions including Head Coach Sean Payton, former defensive coordinator Greg Williams, and GM Mickey Loomis have very little to do with bounties.

What did Aaron just say? This has nothing to do with bounties and hurting players?

Yes that's correct. I even underlined it for you!

The players and coaches did not get the hammer laid down because they were trying to hurt guys. Everyone in the NFL is trying to hurt the other player. There is nothing better for a defensive player than a pancake lay the other guy flat out on the field kind of hit. And if that other guy doesn't get up? Even better. You did your job and then some. That was called an A+ in grade school.

Everyone who wants to whine about 'where's the proof?', and 'why did they get more than spygate?' doesn't get it. These suspensions are about obeying the law and respecting the request of an authoritative figure. Think about this for a moment...

You're driving down the interstate. The speed limit is 55 but you're doing 65. And so are the other 900 cars around you. You all blow past a state trooper. How many get pulled over? None. All is well and everyone is moving along evenly. But then that guy comes blasting through doing 70 weaving in and out of cars. On come the siren and lights and a court date is issued. Why did that guy get pulled? Because he took a little lead way that was offered and ran crazy with it. Get it?

That's the New Orleans Saints. Do guys on other teams try to hurt you and hit you as hard as possible? Yes! Were there cash kitties and small wagers going on around the league for guys who accomplished something first in a game or season? Absolutely. The NFL is full of the most ego driven athletes in the world. They are always trying to one up each other. But then the New Orleans Saints went and took this game that the front office was allowing everyone to play at an equal level and blew it up. They did 90 through a field of cars travelling 55 in a 45.

AND THE STATE TROOPER TRIED TO LET THEM OFF WITH A WARNING!

Roger Goodell knew this was going on. He told the Saints to stop. Not only did they not stop but they hid it from him. They did not disclose all the details when asked directly about it. So put yourself in Goodells shoes. You know someone is breaking the rules and you have given them a warning to stop. It's like you tell your kid to stop kicking the back of your seat while driving. It's funny the first few times. Then Dad is screaming at the top of his lungs and little Johnny is going to bed without dinner. Did Johnny deserve to not get fed just for kicking the back of Dad's seat? All kids kick the back of the seat. That doesn't seem right. But Dad told him to stop and it ended on a breaking point. The Saints (little Johnny) and Goodell (Dad) hit their breaking point. And not only will Jonathon Vilma not get dinner. He can't leave his room. For twelve months.

And Jonathon Vilma isn't little Johnny. Neither is Sean Payton, Mickey Loomis or anyone else involved. They are adults. They knew they shouldn't be doing this. They were told not to do this. And yet they still did it. So if Goodell feels like he has to treat everyone like children and throw some weight around, so be it! Maybe these guys will finally grow up now that they have been smacked down by the league.

So don't think these suspensions have anything to do with bounties or hurting players. They have everything to do with observing the status quo, listening to an authoritative figure and doing what your told. And not pissing off Dad.

NHL Playoffs are As Advertised

The NHL Playoffs is the greatest post season tournament in the world that very few in America seem to care about. We are in a sports society where 78,000 fans will show up to watch the University of Alabama football team practice, but on Sat. night when 3 of the 4 NHL playoff games involving major market teams from Chicago, NY,  and Boston all go into OT more people tune in to watch a struggling Mavs team take on a Kobe-less Lakes squad (and Lamar Odom was at home watching Say Yes to the Dress re-runs with Khloe).

And I can tell you exactly why. But before I do that let's just take a quick glance at what most sports fans have been missing so far this season.

1. Could we have two teams in the same season come back from down 0-3? The Pittsburgh Penguins (called the most talented team in the NHL when healthy by Barry Melrose on my show) seemed to have everything going right only to have it go completely wrong in the first 3 games against the Philadelphia Flyers. It hasn't been for a lack of putting the puck in the net (for those that are counting 50 goals have been registered in 5 games so far) but a lack of defense and solid goaltending AFTER the first period has been the issue.
Now they seem to have found their stride only giving up 5 goals in the last two games, and scoring 13. I love how these series in all of post-season sports can shift and change. The Flyers were up 3-0 at home and leading 3-2 in the 1st period of Game 4. This thing was over. Forty-Five mine of game clock time later it was a 10-3 embarrassment and the series was going back to Pittsburgh. The Penguins go home and win a defensive effort (who knew they play defense in PA?!) 3-2. NOW we go to Game 6 and Flyers fans may be getting a bit nervous. The last time they saw these two teams in their building the Penguins scored 8 consecutive goals to end the scoring for the game. A win for Pittsburgh on Sunday and we go BACK to the Penguins home ice for a decisive game 7. Funny how quickly 3-0 can turn into uh oh...
And that brings us to the Vancouver Canucks (can a guy drop a Russian Rocket Reference here!) who nearly became the first team ever to win the Presidents Trophy for most points in a regular season and go down in a 4-0 sweep in the first series. But the tides have changed there as well. Henrik and Daniel Sedin are Swedish twin brother who act as one unit. They even negotiate their contracts together to ensure they will play for the same team. Henrik, the leading scorer of the two, had missed 12 consecutive games with concussion symptoms. What happens when you take a pair of twins who have played hockey their entire life together and separate them in the playoffs? It's kind of like Lebron playing basketball without the use of his left arm. And your teams goes down 0-3 to the lowly 8 seed Kings. But in that decisive Game 4 sweep opportunity in L.A. Henrik came back. The Canucks got the win, and now we go back to Vancouver (which is known as one of the best home ice advantages in all of the NHL... that is when the twins are playing together and Lebron has both arms available). Could we be headed again for that all important final home game for the underdog in Game 6? We'll see...

2. Speaking of home ice advantage in the playoffs, where has it gone? Vancouver and Pittsburgh didn't help this stat by going down 0-3, two of those games being at home, but right now road teams hold a record of 21-13 so far in these playoffs. So maybe the Kings will be better off with 2 of the final 3 possible games being played in Vancouver. What gives? Extra confidence on the road? Shutting up the crowd? The joy of hearing boo-birds rain down on the home team? Whatever it is it is difficult to explain. The one round home ice tends to hold true is the 1st round with the more lopsided match ups. But either way it's going to be a lot of fun.

3. No Sweeps. How many Game 7's? So we've been at this thing for a week and a half. Over 8 series 34 games have been played and only one series is complete with last nights victory for the Nashville Predators (if Cary Underwood hung out near my locker room I'd be motivated to be the first to win the series as well).  All the Western Conference series are lopsided 3-1 affairs right now, but that includes the #1 seed Canucks gaining confidence as they head home for Game 5 and a ridiculously close series between Chicago and Pheonix. I think the St. Louis series against the Sharks will wrap up in the next game, maybe 2, but don't count the #6 Blackhawks out of anything (more on this in the next segment). In the east its a different story. Three series are knotted at 2-2 and have turned into a best of 3. And you already know about the drama unfolding in the 3-2 series that is Flyers vs. Pens. Could we see all 4 series go to Game 7 in the east? I think so.

4. And with tight series come tight games. Ten of the 34 games have gone to sudden death overtime. Remember how I said don't count the Blackhawks out about 2.7 seconds ago? All four games in that series that is at 3-1 have gone to OT. The Hawks are two kick saves, one timely body check and a sneeze of one fan away from having won this thing 4-0! And 23 of the 34 games have been decided by one goal. Bottom line... don't turn any of these off before they're over, unless the Penguins score five unanswered goals in the 2nd period. Then turn it off or flip over to the Hawks vs. Coyotes where you're guaranteed a sudden death OT.

Chanticleers, Panthers, and Pelicans Find New Home Over the Air Waves Beginning Monday, March 5th

Chanticleers, Panthers, and Pelicans Find New Home Over the Air Waves Beginning Monday, March 5th

Myrtle Beach, SC - On March 5, 2012 sports fans will have two options on the Grand Strand for receiving their sports news and increased coverage will allow for more play-by- play to be heard across a wider listening area from Brunswick to Georgetown Counties.

ESPN Radio, most recently known on the dial as 93.9 ‘The Team’ is moving from the 6,000 watt signal on WJXY to a 12,000 watt signal on WSEA 100.3 FM. Listeners will continue to hear ESPN Radio’s signature national shows in Mike & Mike in the Morning (6 a.m. - 10 a.m.) and The Herd with Colin Cowherd (10 a.m. - 1 p.m.). Local product, “The Drive” with Aaron Marks will continue from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, but listeners will notice a stark difference in the early afternoons and evenings.

From 1:00 until 4:00 p.m. Grand Strand sports radio fans have been used to hearing the Dan Patrick Show, a product distributed by Premier Radio Networks and FOX Sports Radio. The show has been aired on tape delay as it airs live from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. EST across the FOX Sports Radio network. The Dan Patrick Show will now fall in its rightful place as the headline show of the brand new, FOX Sports Radio 1050 owned and operated by Cumulus Media, the same radio group with ownership of ESPN 100.3 ‘The Team’.

In addition to The Dan Patrick Show, FOX Sports Radio 1050 will also air Jim Rome from 12:00 until 3:00 p.m. daily, and will pick up local play by play all around the area.

The “Scott Van Pelt Show” will take its place in the live time slot from 1:00 until 4:00 p.m. every afternoon on ESPN Radio 100.3.

Cumulus Media Sports Director, Aaron Marks, will take on the role of programming both ESPN Radio 100.3 and FOX Sports 1050 to bring all of the nation’s top sports talk programs to the Grand Strand and provide more local sports coverage than ever before.

We are thrilled with the addition of FOX Sports Radio to our cluster of stations. If there has been one complaint about our station I have heard since I started here last July, it is that Dan Patrick is a great show but doesn’t sound good unless it runs live”, says Marks.

Marks goes on to comment, “…the additional station will also allow us to provide the proper coverage to all of our local and regional colleges and professional teams. Every team can have a place to call home for all of their games and we’ll be able to add even more play-by-play than ever before at the high school, college, and pro level.”

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, an Advanced “A” Affiliate of the Texas Rangers, will now call FOX Sports 1050 their home for every home, road, and post-season game. Games will also be streamed through a new website being developed for FOX Sports 1050.

The Carolina Panthers, a long standing partner of ESPN the Team, have renewed their agreement for an additional two years and all games; preseason, regular and post-season will be heard on the new ESPN Radio 100.3.

Coastal Carolina Football, Basketball, and Baseball will continue to air across the flagship station for the Chanticleer Sports Network. The Chanticleers will continue its relationship with Cumulus with all games airing on ESPN Radio 100.3.

South Carolina Gamecock baseball can also be heard on the stations. The two time defending national champions will air 70% of their games on FOX Sports Radio 1050.

Cumulus will now have the opportunity to increase play-by-play coverage on a local level, as well.

With the additional station and stronger signal, we hope to take advantage and bring more local sports to the air. We want to increase our high school and college coverage along the Grand Strand and this new set up will allow us to do that,” says Marks.

Currently there is one daily sports talk show in “The Drive” along with two weekly shows on ESPN Radio 100.3. “The Inside Pitch” airs on Saturday mornings from March - November and “Grand Strand Golf Weekly” airs on Sunday mornings year round. Adding more local and regional talk shows is another goal that will likely become a reality very soon.

It’s in the works,” says Marks, “we will not change anything in our daily national line up between 6 a.m. and 4 p.m. on ESPN or FOX… but on evenings and weekends anything can happen now. Stay tuned.”
